Hello Rotarians!

My son just turned in a paper for his English Composition class. It was an essay response to David Foster Wallace's commencement address to Kenyon College's graduating class of 2005. If you haven't read this before, Google it. You probably have heard parts or all of it in the past. It is a thought-provoking address meant to inspire the graduates to think. To change their perspective. To always look at things in a different way.

As I sit in forced quarantine I am using my time to relax and read. Have deep conversations with my kids. Hang out with my husband. We even had a family-wide snowball fight on our walk this week! As an essential worker, this is my first experiece with the stay at home order.

As Rotarians, it would be easy to just suspend all activity. Some clubs have done that. But RCSC does not work that way. We have adjusted some things, but we continue to do what we always have done, which is respond to the needs in our community.

One thing that will need all hands on deck will be the Adopt an Angel program. Stu has worked very hard to develop the COVID-friendly program and we will need people to respond when he asks for help. There will be many things that we can do while keeping a physical distance and staying safe!

October 24th is World Polio Day. Why not celebrate by signing up for the Virtual President's Luncheon? You can sign up on the district 5450 website. The $25 of the $28 fee goes straight to Polio Plus and will be matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation. While you are on the website, you can use a link to endpolio.org if you would like to donate more than the cost of the registration!

When we are feeling frustrated or shut-in we just need to shift our perspective. There are so many things that we can do in service of others from the comfort of our own homes! If you would like to join a committee that is actively planning some of the things that we have on the horizon, please let me know and I will connect you with the people who would love to have your assistance.

Summit Advocates is looking for a group of volunteers to paint a bedroom in their shelter. Summit Advocates provides services which enhance safety and justice for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and trauma while promoting peace in our community. New Volunteer Opportunity @Building Hope Peer Support Program

This is a program through Katz Amsterdam Foundation and supported by CU Depression Center. Building Hope is one three North American pilot sites. This community-based program is staffed by nonprofessional, skilled volunteers who are trained to listen, empathize, make referrals to mental wellness resources, and foster healthy, meaningful connections.

This is an ongoing, COVID-friendly volunteer opportunity in that the training as well as the work is done virtually and from home. There is an 8 hour training requirement and the first training session is October 23rd. More info is available from Nicole Maynard/719-229-8931 (cell)/Event and Volunteer Coordinator, Building Hope.
