Hello all!

I am wondering how many of us at the zoom meeting on Tuesday were deeply touched by Maggie Ducayet's report on the COVID-19 effect on Honduras. Judging by the number of inconspicuous eye swiping, I think no one left the meeting without putting their own inconveniences in perspective.

I want to meet again in person. I want to be able to have my parents over for dinner and give them the biggest hug! I want to comfortably eat in a restaurant without worrying about the air flow in the building or the cough of the person at the next table. I want to send my child to school and know that he isn't going to bring a dangerous virus home. I want to go to work without worrying that I will be exposed to COVID-19 by someone who is asymptomatic and bring it home to my compromised husband.

However;

I don't have to forage through the woods for food or worry that I don't have food to last through the week. I do worry about my government's response to the pandemic, but my government has not quarantined me away from food distribution areas. I know that if someone I love gets the virus here, there are hospital beds available with supportive medicines and respirators to help them breathe. Not everyone survives this, but they do have more of a fighting chance. My heart goes out to Honduras, and to Maggie who cares so deeply. She is a true Rotarian who does not wait for someone else to help. She rallies the troops and helps herself. I know that she would appreciate more help for Honduras. Checks can be sent to: Summit in Honduras, PO Box 2977, Breckenridge, CO 80424. If you can't send money, send thoughts and prayers for all of the efforts of Maggie's friends in Honduras who are working tirelessly to bring assistance to the villages that have been affected so deeply.

Stay safe and wear your mask. Wash your hands. Keep your physical distance but do something to connect with others today!

Membership

Proposed new (actually returning) member:

Don Sather has been approved by the Membership Committee.  Employed in the computer industry with IBM and Honeywell. Started and ran a solar energy company. Partner in a real estate and property management company. Purchased the Frisco lumberyard in 1984 and grew the business in Summit County for 28 years. Developed the BigHorn Center in Silverthorne. Received recognition from the National Renewable Energy Labs (NREL), State of Colorado, and Dept. of Energy. Have grown the Leadville hardware store over the last ten years. Don has served on numerous Private, Public, and Not-for-Profit boards of directors.

There were business and health issues that caused Don’s resigning from the Rotary Club of Summit County several years ago. Those are now behind him and he is excited about the opportunity to rejoin Rotary. Don knows many of the current members and Rotary projects and believes he can contribute in numerous ways. As a past Club officer, board member, and President, and having served on the District Youth Exchange Committee, he is very familiar with much of the workings of Rotary and believes that knowledge and experience can benefit the Summit Club in many ways.

Other Membership Committee News:

We want to thank all of those sponsors who are identifying community leaders/business professionals and bringing them to our meetings.  Remember, a Prospective Member should attend 3 meetings before turning in his/her application, sponsor form, a short bio and $100 application fee to the Membership Director, Meg Boyer or any one on the Membership Committee.  The application will be presented to the Membership Committee for approval and then the Board of Directors.  Once approved, the applicant's bio will be posted in our bulletin for 3 weeks.  If there are no questions about the Prospective Member the induction will be scheduled.

The primary sponsor will mentor the new member through the Red Badge process.  We encourage all members to interact with Prospective/New Members as much as possible.  One of the Red Badge requirements is to be a greeter 3 times.  Because our club is growing and we are experiencing so many guests, greeters are very important.  You don't have to be a new member to be a greeter.  It is just one more way of participating in Club Service.

Membership Committee Members are: Chairman - Mike Connolly, Julianne Gilchrist, Tom Marmins, Sandy Mortensen, Ann Clement, Susan Juergensmeier, Stephanie Katz, David "Woody" Woodland, Meg Boyer and Mike Spry.

Town of Dillon’s Playhouse Project
Stop by Dillon to check out the playhouses August 7th - September 7th.  A number of your fellow Rotarians contributed to building the Habitat for Humanity playhouse (see Dave Murray and Rick Williams in the photo).  The proceeds from the auction will go to the Family and Intercultural Resource Center’s affordable housing programs and the proceeds from the Habitat House will go toward Habitat for Humanity projects.

Summit Rotary Car Raffle 2020

We have launched our modified annual event this week, inviting our club members to sell or gift one packet of tickets to friends, neighbors, family, and clients via phone, email, and other 'distanced' connections. Several Rotarians are handling distribution of tickets and are calling a designated list to arrange ticket packet hand off, as well as subsequent collection of ticket stubs and money by early September.

We do not expect to be selling at our normal public venues, but will be strongly promoting online sales and will have the car on display several times before the final drawing in September.

This project is an important ongoing source of funding for our many service projects, and equally important it is a vehicle for us all to 'talk up' Rotary with the community. Thanks to all who are able to participate during these strange times!
