May is here! Spring is here, as well as mud season. We've had a great snowy winter but boy, am I glad to finally see signs of spring in Summit County! May is the month when many of our local communities have cleanup days so keep your eye out for these dates. After a long winter please consider helping pick up trash in your neighborhood for even just an hour.
The Rotary theme for May is YOUTH SERVICE. It was therefore fitting that we had a wonderful youth program presented by Marcy Woodland on Tuesday. Marcy is chair of our club's annual Short Story and Poetry Student Contest which is sponsored by Summit Daily News. Every year we are privileged to hear some amazing writing from young student writers thanks to Marcy's dedication to this project. She has been doing this for 10 years now and would love to have some new blood help her next year. This year there were 25 entries to judge from all three County high schools as well as homeschooled students. A number of the winners were able to attend on Tuesday and read excerpts from their winning submittals. The variety of topics was astonishing as was the writing quality! Thank you, Marcy, as well as Summit Daily News, for the hard work and effort that is put into this annual project! Thank you for introducing our club to some incredible young student writers. Another Rotary youth-related topic to remind all members about.....Youth Exchange host families for 2023-24. We were excited to learn we will be welcoming two YE students to Summit County this fall. A girl from Finland and a girl from Spain. Kim Nearpass-Pollack, YE Committee chair, is faced with the tough task of finding 6 host families for the 2023-24 school year. She has found 2 families who are willing to host but needs to find 4 more. Please, please spread the word in your neighborhoods, to your friends, and to your family that Summit County Rotary Club is looking for host families. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not only for the YE student but the host family as well. See more information below.
For those members that were not able to attend Tuesday's meeting, I want to share the wonderful news that our club received 3 prestigious District Awards this past weekend at the District 5450 conference in Denver. There are 60 clubs in our District with ~ 2,800 Rotarians, all of whom can apply for an annual District Award. It is therefore truly an honor and an amazing feat to win a District Award. The two individual awards won are both related to the Rotary May theme of youth service:
Lori Burke, past president, won the Kevin Farrell Leadership Award from Denver SE Rotary Club. This award honors a Rotarian who demonstrates a sustained commitment to the nurturing of leadership development in both youth and adults. Lori's dedication and commitment to the RYLA and YRYLA programs were rightfully acknowledged with this award.
Andy Jarski won the District Governor's Discretionary Four Way Test Award. This award is given in recognition of a Rotarian for outstanding exemplification of the principles of the Four Way Test. Andy continues to be fully committed to guiding middle school students through the Four Way Test program year after year and truly lives his life by the tenets of this creed.
Our club and our Marketing Committee, chaired by Bill Sanders, including former member Rosemary Gullikson, NicoleMiller, and our social media consultant, Leah Rybak, won the District's Public Relations Award. This honor is awarded to the club that has generated increased awareness and understanding of Rotary through outstanding media coverage and public relations efforts. YAY, Summit County Rotary Club for beating stiff competition to win this award!! I look upon my wall At the big circle of light coming from my flashlight Out pops a rabbit Then a butterfly And a dog And a bird soaring high above my bedframe

I make my bird smaller by moving it away from the light
Then bigger by moving toward it
The bird made from the shadow of my hands flies high It soars with so much freedom The only limit is the circle of light

The Rotary Club of Summit County is seeking host families for the 2023-24 academic year.
Our club will be sponsoring two outbound Summit High School students, going to spend one of the best years of their lives in Sweden and Finland. In turn, we will host two foreign students who will live in our wonderful community and attend SHS next year.
Each student will stay with three different Summit County families, so each host family has a student live with them for three months. It is a fun, educational, eye-opening way to bring the world together and make international connections.

I seek to be part of an organization known for ethical leadership and involved in a wide range of community services. I have chosen both of my careers because of my interest in creating positive change. Community journalism allowed me to further my passion to inform people so that they could make educated decisions. Teaching allowed me to further my passion to give young people a voice and a set of analytical skills so they can become impactful members of the community. I choose my volunteer pursuits for similar reasons. Community is the common denominator. In Rotary, I see many opportunities to work with a group of likeminded people to make positive changes in our community.
I grew up in St. Louis Missouri attending local schools from K-12. My primary family includes my parents and my younger brother. I attended college at Miami University of Ohio in Oxford, Ohio and attained a bachelor's degree in Journalism in 1988. I was hired by the Gannett company of community newspapers and worked for the company for 12 years in editing roles for newspapers in Visalia, California; Boise, Idaho; Nyack, New York; and White Plains, New York. I married Jeff Cooper and we raised two children. I obtained a master's degree in education from Boise State University in Idaho in 2000 and have been teaching literature and composition to students in grades 6 through 12 through this year. I began my teaching career at at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Idaho, and then our family moved to Eagle County, Colorado in 2004. Since then, I have been teaching at The Vail Academy K-8 school in Avon, Colorado and Vail Christian High School in Edwards, Co. My husband and I moved to Silverthorne in May, 2021 in order to be closer to my parents in Denver.
The Rotary Book Club is currently reading "The Song of the Cell - An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human," by Siddhartha Mukherjee. We will meet in June, at a time to be announced, to discuss.

Marketing Committee Chair Position
The duties are wide open to create and execute those things which promote our club motto of "making good things happen, in our community, in the world and in ourselves." You will work closely and coordinate with the club president regarding your creative ideas. You will work with our community assets like Krystal93, Summit Daily News, Rotary Social Media, Rotary Website, and other media as appropriate. You will also work directly with the Rotary Sponsor person to learn and further develop the Corporate Sponsors program.

Club Raffle Manager
The Raffle manager is responsible for all communication with the CO Secretary of State for our car raffle fundraiser, our Ice Melt fundraiser, and our Rotary Bingo nights. Must coordinate, communicate, and work closely with the committee chair of each of these events. You will need to take the Raffle and Games Manager training offered online by the CO Secretary of State's office. Certification is good for 4 years.

According to internet: Gmail offers an option to add specific addresses or domains as "safe" so they aren't automatically marked as spam, known as a "Whitelist." Your Whitelists must be managed and set by you. If you want to accept all email sent from a specific address, follow these instructions:
Log in to your Gmail
Click the gear icon in the top-right, and select Settings.
Click the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.
Click Create at New Filter.

The Membership Committee needs new Rotary members (especially people who have joined Rotary in the last 2 - 3 years) to join the Committee to help us meet our challenges in attracting and retaining new members. The Committee meets as needed to discuss approaches in how we can add, and involve, new members. We need to recruit new folks to keep our club vibrant and involved in the community!
A Prospective Member should attend 3 meetings before turning in his/her application, sponsor form, a short bio and $50 application fee to the Membership Chairman, David Guignard, or to any one on the Membership Committee. The application will be presented to the Membership Committee for approval. Once approved, the applicant's bio will be posted in our bulletin for 3 weeks. If there are no questions about the Prospective Member, the induction will be scheduled. Two categories of Membership are available – a Family Membership and a Corporate Membership. Please contact an individual on the Membership Committee for details on these new types of Membership.
